SXSW was a whirlwind. It may have been both the longest week or our lives, but also one of the most exciting.

We were able to hear some speakers the first few day of the SXSWi conference. We listened to great storytellers, innovators and entrepreneurs, all of whom which were deeply inspiring.

We could not have been any more excited to meet the hundreds of amazing people that stopped by our booth. We love to share our story and this gave us the chance to share not only that, but Treasure Island and upcoming artwork from our new titles.

We would like to give a huge THANK YOU to anyone who did stop by! We were touched by the stories we heard, as well as the ideas and feedback we were given. Thank you to everyone who bought a shirt or a poster, ...]]> http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/03/sxsw/feed/ 0 SXSW Part One http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/03/sxsw-part-one/ http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/03/sxsw-part-one/#comments Sat, 10 Mar 2012 21:04:43 +0000 Jenna http://www.spacedogbooks.com/?p=486 It isn’t often that all of Space Dog Books is in one city, nonetheless in one room. So, we were very excited to be able to fly out to Austin and spend the whole week together! We are a part of the SXSW Tradeshow, so we were thrilled to receive all our shirts and temporary tattoos that we haven’t been able to wear around yet.

Victoria and Chad stopped by the exhibit hall today to check out the booth set up, it’s really coming along and we are all on the edge of or seats waiting to see it finished!

Here is a little sneak peek: (Emphasis on little)

We attended some amazing panels yesterday about storytelling and technology. Today, Tymn and I saw Joss Whedon speak about the new Avengers movie and his passion for small productions like Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along ...]]> http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/03/sxsw-part-one/feed/ 0 Just a normal morning at the office…… http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/02/just-a-normal-morning-at-the-office/ http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/02/just-a-normal-morning-at-the-office/#comments Wed, 22 Feb 2012 19:25:08 +0000 Jenna http://www.spacedogbooks.com/?p=475 Today we got our temporary tattoos for SXSW, so what did we do this morning, you ask?

On E-books vs. Print http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/01/ebookvprint/ http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/01/ebookvprint/#comments Tue, 31 Jan 2012 03:03:15 +0000 Jenna http://www.spacedogbooks.com/?p=452

There has been a lot of talk recently about e-books and the death of the printed page, American novelist Jonathan Franzen made some comments at The Hay Festival in Cartegena, Colombia that have started a dialogue we are jumping into here with some thoughts of our own. As an interactive publisher who believes that books are about the magic of a good story regardless of where they are read we take some umbrage at much of Franzen’s comments.

Such as this one about e-books from the Telegraph:

“I think, for serious readers, a sense of permanence has always been part of the experience. Everything else in your life is fluid, but here is this text that doesn’t change. …

A screen always feels like we could delete that, change that, move it around. So for a literature-crazed person like me, it’s just not permanent ...]]> http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/01/ebookvprint/feed/ 2 Fauxgo http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/01/fauxgo/ http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/01/fauxgo/#comments Mon, 23 Jan 2012 20:12:48 +0000 Jenna http://www.spacedogbooks.com/?p=444 Our Art Director, Tymn Armstrong, has been working on Fauxgo for about 6 months now and every time he adds a new one, I am flooded with nostalgia and giddiness. Created and curated by Tymn, Fauxgo has pieces from various designers as, well as T-Dog, himself. (Yes, I called him T-Dog, deal with it.)

This one, especially, is my favorite.

“I really love the skillful way you beat the other girls to the brides bouquet”

Q&A with Matthew Cruickshank http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/01/qa-with-matthew-cruickshank/ http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/01/qa-with-matthew-cruickshank/#comments Tue, 17 Jan 2012 21:02:34 +0000 Jenna http://www.spacedogbooks.com/?p=420 Mr. Matthew Cruickshank, the illustrator of Treasure Island, was nice enough to answer a few questions about his process for me. You can check out more of his artwork on his blog, Ye Crooked Legge.

What was your process when designing TI?

The process was the same as working on any design, print or story project. Small thumbnail sketches first to look for an interesting composition, then fleshing a few out to show colour before working up the final image. Sometimes the roughs are completely discarded, but it’s still important to have thought about the different ways the design could’ve been staged.

What was your biggest challenge when designing a book that is so well known?

Hoping to do it justice! It’s a classic story which still holds up incredibly today. There’s no loose fat on the plot and Stevenson always takes the reader ...]]> http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/01/qa-with-matthew-cruickshank/feed/ 0 Gallery 1988 x Adult Swim http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/01/gallery1988xadultswim/ http://www.gdmig-spacedogbooks.com/2012/01/gallery1988xadultswim/#comments Wed, 11 Jan 2012 20:05:07 +0000 Jenna http://www.spacedogbooks.com/?p=414 I wish I were in LA, I would be at Gallery 1988 this Friday for the opening of their Adult Swim show.
