Mr. Matthew Cruickshank, the illustrator of Treasure Island, was nice enough to answer a few questions about his process for me. You can check out more of his artwork on his blog, Ye Crooked Legge.
What was your process when designing TI?
The process was the same as working on any design, print or story project. Small thumbnail sketches first to look for an interesting composition, then fleshing a few out to show colour before working up the final image. Sometimes the roughs are completely discarded, but it’s still important to have thought about the different ways the design could’ve been staged.

The only instrument in the trio that would really be considered a toy would be the piano. Currently, toy pianos are experiencing a vibrant musical life. The majority of instruments in the trio are less widely known, perhaps somewhat anachronistic, but it is my drive and passion to bring to bear the relevance of musical instruments that have been lost in time to modern audiences, and ultimately, modern acceptance as conduits of music.
Our Art Director, Tymn Armstrong’s poster for Treasure Island was featured on French Paper.
Last month, Space Dog Books had the pleasure of hosting a party to celebrate the release of Treasure Island. We had a blast and were so glad to see so many familiar faces, as well as some new ones. We were so thrilled to finally share this project, that we have been working tirelessly on, with everyone that attended. Toy Box Trio started off the evening, their whimsical sound really set the mood for the evening. We want to give a big THANK YOU to everyone who made it out! We hope you had as wonderful of an experience as we did!
